Biography
Patis Intaramaha’s music holds the rigour of the European classical tradition in one hand and the freedom of jazz in the other. Whether on violin or piano, in classical or jazz, his playing sings with the directness of a voice unafraid of speaking his heart, and it carries through everything he does.
Born in Bangkok in 1998, he began piano at four and found the violin at thirteen. A Bachelor of Music with First-Class Honours at Mahidol University led to Europe: an Erasmus year at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Peter Schuhmayer, then a Master of Arts in Performance at the Zurich University of the Arts under Alexander Sitkovetsky, a jazz violin minor alongside, and masterclasses from Christoph Poppen, Ilya Gringolts, Pavel Vernikov, Jack Liebeck, and Rainer Schmidt. He has performed in the Grosser Saal of the Tonhalle Zürich and Geneva’s Victoria Hall, appeared alongside the Carmina Quartett, played guest first violin with the Thailand Philharmonic, and won gold at the Sugree Charoensook International Music Competition.
A year into Zürich’s Soloist Diploma programme, a teaching assistantship offer brought him to Texas. Now pursuing his doctorate at UNT as assistant to Professor Julia Bushkova, Patis has had a season that shows his full range: concerts with the Bancroft Quartet, UNT’s graduate fellowship quartet, sessions with the university’s Jazz String Lab, chamber music evenings in Bangkok, violin on Mariah Carey’s “Nothing Is Impossible,” and arrangements for Coca-Cola Thailand’s advertising campaigns. A teacher since 2014, he has guided students from first lessons to conservatory admissions in Graz and St. Petersburg, and to competition prizes of their own. On stage, in the studio, or in a lesson, the goal never changes: to say through music what words cannot, and to send the listener home with something true.
